Mpainters of the 15th century. Both the Northern Renaissance painters such as Rogier van der Weyden and the Italian masters of the 14th and 15th century such as Giotto, are used as inspiration for some of Piper’s work.

Homage, number (10), for example, is broadly based on a detail from the Portinari Altarpiece by Hugo Van Der Goes in the Uffizi, Florence.

Another example of how Piper uses the art of the past for inspiration can be seen in the print, The Groom, number (8), which is based on the important woodcut The Bewitched Groom 1544 by Hans Baldung Grien. It is one of the first mass-produced secular images of that period.

Several works in this web gallery are based on Piper’s personal experiences and formal experimentation with colour and shape such as Aristotle’s Definition, number (4). This print was created by combining photographs of children's toys with objects modelled in the computer environment.

A similar approach was taken in, Always Arrangements, numbers (1) and (2) exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer show in 2005. These images combined ambiguous interior spaces with objects such as an artist’s easel or a wall paper pasting table. The process of form-modelling and lighting help create a believable impression of reality, while the objects and compositions and even the title add an unsettling phycological air to the pictures.

The Sixth Campaign numbers (3) and (7) are based on Piper’s impressions of Middle East during a three-year stay there in the 1980‘s.

Some of the other influences important to his work are paintings and prints by the American artists Edward Hopper and Grant Wood, characterised by their often silent and atmospheric worlds. The English artists, Samuel Palmer and Stanley Spencer, who investigate religious themes and humanist symbolism, are important influences.

Finally, the Theatre, stage design and classical Opera design have influenced the work in this little gallery.
